Offering A Variety of Insurance Choices
At Maryland Senior Insurance, Medicare is our specialty. We have access to dozens of companies so you can choose the right plan for yourself, from a wide range of prices and benefit options. As independent agents, Maryland Senior Insurance brokers offer the following type of plans:
Medicare Supplement Plans - Also known as Medigap Plans. Popular choices are Plans F, G, N, A and High-Deductible Plans F & G. These plans start paying where Medicare leaves off, they fill the "gap" in Medicare's coverage. Use virtually any doctor or hospital nationwide without networks or referrals. Think of Supplement Plans as "all-you-can-eat" as you pay your premium once per month, and can consume as many of the benefits at no additional cost. Prices vary by age, sex and even pre-existing conditions. Supplement Plans are available statewide, and are offered by dozens of insurance carriers. Enrollment is year round, however, there are a few special rules and deadlines surrounding how and when you can enroll. Connect with us for additional information.
Medicare Advantage Part C Plans - These plans vary by county and are typically offered by a variety of companies, both local (like Johns Hopkins / Alterwood Health) and national carriers (like UnitedHealthcare / Aetna). Depending on your county, there are HMO's, PPO's and Special Needs Plans (DSNP) available. Advantage Plans typically require you to select doctors from a network and offer a large variety of extra benefits built into the plan such as: dental insurance, vision benefits, hearing aids, transportation, a free gym membership, drug coverage, a nurse hotline, Over-The-Counter credits to shop, and much much more. Contact us for your options.
Medicare Rx Drug Plans - Known as Part D or PDP plans, these small insurance policies are separate from both a Supplement or Advantage Plan. Typically paired with a Supplement Plan, these Part D plans vary in cost as well as network of pharmacies. Plans vary by state and can be changed during the Fall Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). At Maryland Senior Insurance, we can help you determine which drug plan would be best for you for each year based on your current list of medications and where you prefer to shop. As a free service, we will review your plans each fall.

2027 Maryland Medicare Plan Options
In 2027, the State of Maryland's Medicare options will change significantly. Prices and plan options will change, affecting every senior on Medicare in the state. We'll cover two of these changes: Medicare Advantage Plan Terminations, base Medicare premiums, deductibles and Medicare Part D.
View the 2027 Maryland Advantage Plan Options. This is a database of all Advantage Plan options in the state of Maryland. You can search and sort plans in your area.
Regardless of the plan you have, all of these basic costs are shared by all of those on Medicare. Here are the 2027 costs as we know it:
2027 Medicare costs established by CMS
Federal cost benchmarks for Medicare Parts B and D
| Cost category | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Part B monthly premium | $202.90 | $209.50 +3.3% |
| Part B annual deductible | $283 | $310 +9.5% |
| Part D annual deductible | $615 | $700 +13.8% |
| Part D maximum out-of-pocket | $2,100 | $2,400 +14.3% |
Note: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) annually establishes certain Medicare cost benchmarks that apply nationwide. These federally-established costs are consistent across all regions and insurance carriers. Individual plan premiums for Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug coverage will vary by carrier and geographic location.
Maryland's Medicare Advantage
The 2027 outlook for Medicare Advantage in Maryland is seen as being in a decline for both plan selection and benefit options. The main reason for this is a lack of funding within the state for Advantage Plans to survive. Here's a few highlights about next year's outlook:
- 15,000+ Members are losing coverage: Termination letters will be mailed mid-to-late September if your Maryland Advantage Plan is being terminated. Keep this letter, it's your 'golden ticket' to obtain coverage without medical underwriting.
- Every county in Maryland is affected: Every county has at least one Medicare Advantage Plan that is terminating. Those losing their plans will need to reapply for a new plan by 12/31/2026 or face a major gap in coverage.
- Humana has the highest number of terminations: Humana will terminate more Advantage plan clients nationwide (an estimated 600,000) than any other carrier in 2027.
- Local carriers making cuts: Three additional carriers are removing plans throughout the state, check back on or after October 1st to see who those carriers are.
- Moving into old territory: Another local carrier has announced they will return to a once abandoned county for 2027 with an Advantage plan designed for those beneficiaries that qualify for Medicaid with a Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) or a Full Benefits Dual Eligible (FBDE) designation from the state. We will update this site on October 1st.
Medicare Supplement Plan Outlook
Premiums for Medicare Supplement Plans (aka Medigap) should continue to rise in Maryland as the utilization rates increase. Since 2024, when most seniors felt safe to return to the doctors due to Covid, the billing frequency has stedily risen. In 2025 and 2026, we saw premium rate increase as high as 24% from some notable national insurance carriers.
- Estimated 8% ~ 18% increases: We are anticipating more of the same monthly premium increases for 2027 and beyond, with price hikes leveling out into 2028. We feel we're at the tail end of these market adjustments post-Covid.
- Maryland's Birthday Rule: You can change from one company to the next without having to answer health questions. All you need to do is apply for a "like-kind" plan (like Plan G to Plan G) within 30 days after your birthday each year, and you're approved. There are no health questions, the coverage is the same, and you cannot be denied coverage. This is the easiest way to lower your premiums without having to worry about pre-existing conditions.
Part D Prescription Drug Plan Changes in 2027
Expect premiums to rise as the Trump Administration elected not to continue monthly subsidies to drug insurance companies in 2027. This was a temporary Medicare Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration program that helped lower premiums by approximately $13 per month, per senior.
Because of the overhaul of the distribution of costs associated with the Medicare Part D program, costs will continue to change next year.
- Estimated 5% to 25% Premiums: We are anticipating premiums to rise, due to the lack of subsidies in 2027.
- Max Out Of Pocket Increases: In 2026 you had a $2,100 Moop, in 2027 it will be $2,400. This is the max you will pay for both deductibles and copayments. It does not include monthly premiums or any $35 copays you make for your insulin.
- Lower Drug Costs on popular drugs: The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) allowed Medicare to negotiate with drug companies to lower rates of some of the most popular medications.
